The Bundle of Sticks

Hemos creado una categoría propia para las entradas con Fábulas de Esopo, para poder encontrar todas juntas fácilmente en vez de ir buscándolas por Stories. ¡Ya se están acumulando unas cuantas fábulas!
La de hoy, El haz de palitos, suele ser citada a menudo en películas y libros. Es cierto que es algo facilona, pero también que muestra muy claramente lo que pretende enseñar. ¡Disfrutadla! Como siempre, texto en inglés y español con el audio en medio.
The Bundle of Sticks
A certain father had several sons, who were forever quarreling among themselves. No words he could say did the least good, so he tried to think of a very striking example that would make them see that discord would lead them to misfortune.
One day when the quarreling had been much more violent than usual and each of the sons was moping, he asked one of them to bring him a bundle of sticks. Then handing the bundle to each of his sons in turn he told them to try to break it. But although each one tried his best, none was able to do so.
The father then untied the bundle and gave the sticks to his sons to break one by one. This they did very easily.
“My sons,” said the father, “do you not see how certain it is that if you agree with each other and help each other, it will be impossible for your enemies to injure you? But if you are divided among yourselves, you will be no stronger than a single stick in that bundle.”
In unity is strength.

El haz de palitos
Cierto padre tenía varios hijos, que estaban siempre peleándose entre ellos. Nada de lo que pudiera decir hacía ningún bien, así que trató de pensar en un ejemplo muy impactante que les hiciera ver que la discordia los llevaría a la desgracia.
Un día que las disputas habían sido mucho más violentas de lo normal y cada uno de los hijos estaba cabizbajo, le pidió a uno de ellos que le trajera un haz de palitos. Entonces dando el haz a cada uno de sus hijos por turno le pidió que intentara romperlo. Pero aunque cada uno dio lo mejor que pudo, ninguno lo consiguió.
El padre entonces desató el haz y dio los palos a sus hijos para que los rompieran uno por uno. Consiguieron hacer esto muy fácilmente.
“Hijos míos”, dijo el padre, “¿no veis lo claro que es que si estáis de acuerdo unos con otros y os ayudáis, será imposible que vuestros enemigos os hagan daño? Pero si estáis divididos entre vosotros, no seréis más fuertes que uno solo de los palitos de ese haz.”
La unión hace la fuerza.
